R2 – SECURITY IN CASE OF FIRE

Although raw material like fuel, wood has an excellent fire behaviour if used in proper sections. Due to its strength and to its degree of humidity it is in fact a poor conductor of heat and a material that is predictable in behaviour! Various national and European legislations, in particular the UNI 9504 and the European standard called Eurocode 5 – UNI ENV 1995-1-2 “Design of timber structures” indicate the procedures to analytically evaluate the reaction and fire resistance of structural elements in wood of different species.
The mechanism at the basis of its fire resistance is due to the formation of a thin outer Carbonized layer able to thermally isolate the greater part of the section of the structural element and therefore to preserve its mechanical strength. This behaviour is further improved by the use in the phase of the production process of laminated wood adhesives and glues suitable to ensure self extinguishing and (swelling) intumescence.
